In Remembrance
The 22nd September 2026 marks the second anniversary of the "alleged" Coward Strike (blow to the head from behind and without warning) on Cameron at Burleigh. The matter is still before the courts.
This year to mark the occasion, we repeated the pattern we used a year ago, but we had built on ideas that we had worked towards over the past 12 months.
Sonia and I (with Murphy the dog in support) again laid some flowers at the location where the alleged Coward Strike happened, at this time and place, exactly two years ago, at around 2:20am, on the 22nd September 2024.
It did feel different this year. We were more prepared, had already been through the worst of it, and had a better understanding of what to expect and how it might feel this year. Obviously we still had our moments, but it was definitely a different experience for us at this time and place, on this date.
After sitting, talking, and remebering Cameron, we then drove the Cam Van to the top of Burleigh Headland to watch the sunrise over the ocean,as we had done last year. While up there, we watched the sun come up over the horizon, the sky turn from black to pink to gold, and whales again played beyond the breakers as the sun rose.
Once the sun was shining brightly, we went back down to sit at Cammy's Tree down on the Burleigh foreshore.
This year we had planned for a bigger "event" for this week. We had orgainsed council approval and had their support to be there for the week. We had purchased a gazebo, an extra table, we had a new banner for our association to help raise further awareness, and we had a much higher readiness and preparedness to talk with anyone who wanted to chat with us. We had ordered, purchased and created more physical products that carried our website and association information as well as awareness information around Coward Strikes in general. We had done more research and had a more purpose driven agenda for this week. While we had many people make donations throughout the week, we gave out most of our products for free to help spread the information and raise awareness about our story and Coward Strikes in general.
Like last year, there were some who didn't know about it, some who had heard about it, and some who already knew about it. But there were a lot of people who had heard about it, who remembered us from last year, and who stopped to talk. We had a lot more conversations with random public that we met, some taking just minutes, some people staying for hours. We spoke with children who had lost their father to a coward punch about 10 years earlier, as well as people from interstate who knew of similar associations, foundations and campaigns like ours.It was a more rewarding, albeit much busier and more physically tiring week than last year.
What we felt was we had made some connections from last year and had some feeling that the public care about this as an issue, not just because of us directly. We felt we had made a bit of a difference for other people, not just for ourselves.
